Custom-made mezzanine floors

Profielnorm supplies more than 2,000 new mezzanine floors every year. To give you some examples, you will find Profielnorm case studies here. These mezzanine floors are built and delivered entirely based on the customer’s specification.

Large spans for a logistics hub

Quick facts:
  • Double-deck mezzanine flooring
  • Portalised construction
  • Optimised column grid and huge spans; Profielnorms’ core strength
  • Mezzanine surface: 31,000m2
  • Fire enclosures around stair towers

The challenge:

The mezzanine floors were part of a major, new central logistic hub for our customer. Goods of the customer are mainly large packages, therefore wide spans in the steelwork are necessary to prevent the customer from a lot of obstacles, and to maintain wide driveways. A lot of free space under the mezzanine gives directly two other challenges; no blocking cross bracings and a huge point load on the concrete floor.

Our solution:

Together with the consulting party in between, we came up with a sequence of nine, seven, seven metre span in main beam direction and six metre spans in secondary beam direction. This uneven column grid was a hundred percent match with the building column lay out and the required driveways.

“In the tender process it just turns out that you are the best possible option to fulfill our needs”

By being able to think along early in the process, we were soon able to offer a suitable solution.

Profielnorm is strong in large spans and that was clearly shown here. The customer had a very clear timetable for realising this project. Because the contract was awarded to Profielnorm at an early stage, there was also sufficient preparation time left to smoothly realise this large project.

I look back on a very pleasant collaboration and I am pleased with the confidence that they have placed in us. It is therefore great that such a large mezzanine floor has been realised. Exactly what we are good at!

A 31,000m2 warehouse mezzanine floor

We got the opportunity to step into the initial stages of the building design for a huge retailing customer. We came up with a totally sufficient solution for their new distribution centre. A no nonsense approach, with the mix of looking for the best solution in relation to the building requirements and the budget we finally managed together to come up with a brilliant solution in terms of our customer’s logistic process.

Column loads have been evaluated and together with the customer we took part in the required approval process to get the necessary building permits. With special knot connections on each level of the column we figured out a solution to have a bracing free steel construction in main beam direction. Other direction of the mezzanine was still stabilised with crosses. Locations of these crosses were in strategic locations where the goods where to be stored. In a fully operational warehouse, the customer does not have a single blocking issue for his operation.

An additional requirement was the save evacuation routes in case of an emergency. We designed a special construction with enclosed stair towers which can hold the required twenty minutes for a save escape in case of a fire.
